2016 is likely the last year of data collection for my PhD research. :( But I'm hoping to get as much data on Carolina Chickadees as possible this year! If you already have nest boxes in your yard (for chickadees, bluebirds, wrens, etc.), would you be willing to monitor your box weekly and report whether you have any chickadee activity?
I'm looking for new nest boxes in the following areas: Washington DC (any quadrant), Montgomery Co and Prince George's county MD, Fairfax and Arlington Co., VA
To be a part of this study I just ask for a few things:
1) Monitor your nest box weekly (April-June) for evidence of a chickadee nest and report the contents (eggs, nestlings, etc).
2) If you get an active chickadee nest, be willing to let myself and my technicians visit your house to collect supplementary data on nestling growth, diet and movement. In June/July, we will also do a plant survey in your yard and surrounding neighborhood. We will schedule our visits with you and will not arrive unannounced.
3) Willing to fill out a brief survey on your yard management decisions.
4) Willing to not feed any insect-based food (mealworms, crickets) etc. Seed is ok!
If all this sounds good to you, please fill out the below form to let me know that you are interested! I will respond to your email with more information and answer any questions you may have. To find out more about my PhD work, please visit here and here
